Every man dies. Not every man really lives. William Wallace From the movie Braveheart

This memorial website was created to remember my dearest brother, Deryk Michael Peters who was born in Lewiston, Maine on February 3, 1975 and passed away on January 28, 1999 at the age of 23.

Deryk was the kind of person you couldn't help but like. He was exuberant, energetic and fiercely competitive. When he smiled, you couldn't help but smile with him. He won the hearts of many in the short 23 years he graced our earth. He was one of a kind, and we loved him.

My big brother Deryk lived. Really lived. He was adventurous and liked to give our Mom gray hair. Aside from joining the Navy, going through boot camp, and becoming a SAR (Sea Air Rescue), he also loved extreme sports. I remember as a little girl watching him BMX race at Black Mountain. As a pre-teen watching him jump off ramps on a skate board and as a teenager watching him cruise down a snow coverd hill with only a board strapped to his feet. He certainly suffered a bump or two and a broken bone once or twice before his time on this earth was over. His life may have been short, too short really, but my brother lived more in his 23 years than I have so far in my nearly 25.

As the years pass by I begin to worry. Am I forgetting him? So I found this website to remind us all of the wonderful things we remember about Deryk. His amazing smile, the twinkle in his blue eyes, the sound of his laughter. His memory will forever live on, through me, and you and all of us who loved him. He was an amazing man, stubborn, goofy, but amazing.

Please take the time to post some of your favorite memories about the man who brought so much joy into our lives with his own.

I love you, Deryk. Not a day goes by that I don't wonder what life would be like if you were still in it. I only hope that you're proud of us, Megan and I. The women we've become, the mothers' we've become. Even though we may grow older than you, you'll alway be our big brother.

You will live forever in our memories and hearts.

Very sad to see.  Me and Deryk completed boot camp together and air crew.  we were good friends, i think of him from time to time and all the crazy things we did.  Recently I helped my son move and a lot of old pics fell out of a box that were from my navy days and there on the floor were several of Derek while we were in boot and on leave back home in Louisiana..  I imagined him with a large family out there not knowing he had passed.  I remember him speaking fondly of his family back in Maine. Truly sorry for the loss he was one of a kind!

For me, my brother, you made the difficult task of moving to a somewhat foreign land in an incredibly awkward time totally seamless. That's how you were. From the moment I met you-12 yrs. old, summer vacation at dads/ so far away from Anything familiar..there you are, banging on the screen door-"let's go swimming, Tex!" ; to one of the last times I saw you, right after graduating high school, canton to portland on a speed bike/ Deryk at the wheel!! Football, girls, practicing heel flips for hours (at 15)...launch ramps..your moms amazing chocolate chip cookies..Your energy was so strong, my friend. I miss you SO MUCH, Deryk. I have not, nor will I ever let you fade. I Love you, Brother. Until then.
